How to get rid of maggots and bin smells for good
Lifting the lid to a writhing mass of maggots is one of summer's least pleasant surprises. The good news is that they're entirely preventable, and getting rid of them is straightforward once you know what's causing them.
Maggots are fly larvae. Flies are drawn to food waste, lay eggs on it, and in warm weather those eggs hatch within a day. No food residue means no maggots.
Clearing an active infestation
Once the bin is emptied, pour in boiling water (or a kettle of hot water with a little washing-up liquid) to kill any remaining larvae. A diluted disinfectant or white vinegar solution works too.
Scrub the base and sides, rinse, and let the bin dry fully in the sun if you can — dryness alone discourages flies from returning.
Stopping them coming back
Always bag and tie food waste before it goes in the bin. Loose scraps are an open invitation.
Keep the lid closed and the bin out of direct sun where possible. Sprinkling a little bicarbonate of soda in the base absorbs moisture and odour, and a regular sanitising clean removes the residue flies are attracted to in the first place.
Why smells linger even after emptying
The smell isn't the rubbish — it's the film of bacteria left behind on the plastic. Emptying the bin doesn't remove it, which is why a 'clean' looking bin can still reek on a warm day.
Only a proper wash-and-sanitise removes that bacterial layer. That's the difference between a bin that smells fresh and one that just smells slightly less bad.

Does salt or bleach get rid of maggots?+
Both can kill maggots on contact, but boiling water is quicker and safer for the bin. The real fix is removing the food residue they feed on and keeping the bin clean and dry.
Why does my bin smell even though it's empty?+
Because the smell comes from bacteria stuck to the plastic, not the rubbish itself. Only washing and sanitising the bin removes it.
